Description

Indications for a Knee Immobilizer

Post-Trauma or Post-Cast Support

Provides stability after cast removal for minor fractures or injuries.

Mild Knee Instability

Helps in conditions where some movement is allowed but excessive bending is restricted.

Pain Relief for Arthritis or Knee Swelling

Reduces strain on the knee and helps in inflammatory conditions.

Application

1. Prepare the Patient
  • Ensure the patient is sitting or lying down with their leg extended and relaxed.
  • The skin should be clean and dry to prevent irritation.
  • A thin cotton liner or sock can be worn under the brace for comfort.
2. Position the Immobilizer
  • Place the brace at the back of the knee so it aligns with the thigh, knee, and shin.
  • Ensure the patellar (kneecap) opening, if present, is correctly positioned over the kneecap.
  • The side stays or metal bars should align with the sides of the leg for proper support.
3. Secure the Straps
  • Start fastening the bottom strap (near the ankle) first to anchor the brace.
  • Tighten the top strap (above the knee) next for upper leg stability.
  • Secure the middle straps last to ensure even compression and support.
  • Make sure the straps are snug but not too tight—they should provide support without cutting off circulation.
4. Check for Proper Fit & Comfort
  • The knee should remain straight with limited or no bending.
  • The brace should feel secure but not cause discomfort or numbness.
  • The patient should be able to walk (if allowed) with the immobilizer providing stable support.
