Description
Indications for Using a Tennis Elbow Support
1. Lateral Epicondylitis (Tennis Elbow)
Inflammation or degeneration of the tendons that attach to the lateral epicondyle of the elbow, typically caused by repetitive wrist or forearm motions.
The support reduces strain on the tendons, alleviating pain and promoting healing.
2. Medial Epicondylitis (Golfer’s Elbow)
Similar to tennis elbow but affects the tendons on the inner side of the elbow. The support can help manage pain and strain during activities.
3. Forearm Tendonitis
Used to alleviate stress on inflamed forearm tendons caused by repetitive activities like typing, lifting, or sports.
4. Overuse or Repetitive Strain Injuries
Beneficial for individuals who perform repetitive wrist and arm movements, such as in sports, manual labor, or prolonged computer use.
5. Work-Related Elbow Pain
Helps relieve pain in workers who frequently use tools, lift heavy objects, or perform repetitive arm motions (e.g., painters, carpenters).
6. Post-Injury or Post-Surgery Support
Provides additional stability and reduces strain during the recovery phase after an elbow injury or surgical procedure.
7. Chronic Elbow Pain
Offers symptomatic relief for individuals with ongoing elbow pain due to degenerative conditions like tendinosis.
8. Sports or Physical Activities
Prevents injury or recurrence of pain in athletes engaging in activities like tennis, golf, racquetball, or weightlifting.
Application of a Tennis Elbow Support (Brace or Strap)
A tennis elbow support helps relieve pain by reducing strain on the tendons of the forearm. Proper application ensures maximum effectiveness and comfort.
Steps for Applying a Tennis Elbow Brace
1. Identify the Correct Position
Locate the painful area on the outer part of your elbow (lateral epicondyle).
The brace should be placed about 1-2 inches (2-5 cm) below the elbow joint on the forearm.
2. Positioning the Brace
Wrap the strap around the forearm, ensuring the pad (if present) is positioned over the muscle belly (not the bony part of the elbow).
If the brace has a compression pad, place it directly over the forearm muscles (on the outer side for tennis elbow, inner side for golfer’s elbow).
3. Securing the Brace
Fasten the strap snugly but not too tight—it should apply pressure without cutting off circulation.
Make sure you can still move your fingers freely.
4. Comfort & Function Check
- Check for proper tension—the brace should provide relief but not feel overly tight.
- Try making a fist or gripping an object—pain should decrease with support.
- Adjust if necessary—ensure it stays in place without sliding.
