Description
Indication for Use
Mallet Finger Injury
When the fingertip droops and cannot be actively straightened due to a torn or stretched extensor tendon.
Extensor Tendon Rupture
Partial or complete tear of the tendon responsible for straightening the finger.
Distal Phalanx Fracture (Bony Mallet Finger)
When a small bone fragment is pulled off by the injured tendon.
Post-Surgical Immobilization
After surgery to repair a severe mallet finger injury.
Preventive Support
In some cases, used to prevent further injury during sports or activities.
A mallet finger splint keeps the fingertip fully extended (straight)
allowing the tendon to heal in the correct position.
A mallet finger splint
is used to keep the distal interphalangeal (DIP) joint (the fingertip joint) in a straight position, allowing the extensor tendon to heal properly. Proper application is essential for effective treatment.
Application
1. Prepare the Finger
Clean and dry the injured finger to prevent skin irritation. If recommended, place a thin layer of padding (like gauze) to prevent skin breakdown. Ensure the fingertip is fully extended (straight) before applying the splint—this is crucial for healing.
2. Position the Splint
Choose the correct size splint to ensure a snug fit. Place the splint over the top (dorsal) or bottom (volar) side of the finger, depending on the splint type. The splint should cover the entire fingertip and extend to the middle of the finger to provide full support.
3. Secure the Splint
Use medical tape or Velcro straps to hold the splint in place. Ensure the tape is firm but not too tight—it should not cut off circulation. Keep the DIP joint fully extended at all times while wearing the splint.
4. Securing the Thumb Strap
Adjust the thumb strap to provide support without restricting blood flow. The thumb should feel supported but not overly compressed.
4. Check for Proper Fit
✅ The finger should remain straight without bending at the tip.
✅ There should be no excessive pressure causing discomfort or skin irritation.
✅ The splint should stay in place without slipping during daily activities.
